Marietta, Ga. -- Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that Amanda Rudd has been awarded the title of 2009 Thriving Student Achiever for her creative entry expressing her dream for the future.
In honor of the 17th year of the SolvayCARESSM scholarship program, Amanda was awarded an educational scholarship totaling $17,000. In September, Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that 40 students with cystic fibrosis (CF) who are pursuing higher education had each been awarded SolvayCARESSM scholarships and were eligible to be named the 2009 Thriving Student Achiever through a month-long, public voting period. Amanda's entry, which received the most votes, along with those of the other scholarship recipients, can be viewed at www.SolvayCARESScholarship.com.
"CF is a part of me and who I am, but it runs alongside me and does not stand in my way," said Amanda Rudd, 2009 SolvayCARESSM Thriving Student Achiever and student at Salt Lake Community College, Salt Lake City, Utah. "Earning the Thriving Student Achiever scholarship has lifted some of the financial burden of attending college so that I can focus on my studies to become a dental hygienist."
In 2009, Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc. has awarded scholarships totaling more than $200,000 to nearly 250 students living with CF through its SolvayCARESSM Scholarship program. Each year, 40 students receive a one-year scholarship of $2,500 to help finance post-secondary education; however, as a special recognition this year, every eligible 2009 applicant was honored with a $500 scholarship. Profiles, including essays and creative presentations, featuring the 40 scholarship recipients, including the Thriving Student Achiever, can be viewed online at www.SolvayCARESScholarship.com.
"Solvay Pharmaceuticals congratulates Amanda on being named the 2009 Thriving Student Achiever," said Dr. Stephen Hill, president of Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc. "She embodies the positive attitude and spirit of all of our outstanding scholarship recipients, who are each role models for the CF community."
Since 1993, Solvay Pharmaceuticals has donated more than $2 million dollars in scholarships to high-achieving students with CF. For more information about the SolvayCARESSM Scholarship program, please visit www.SolvayCARESScholarship.com.
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States. Cystic fibrosis presents extraordinary health burdens for patients and financial challenges for their families. Thanks to tremendous advances in medical treatments, more young adults with CF are living longer, healthier lives than ever before, and many more are pursuing dreams of higher education. Today, more than 40 percent of people living with CF are aged 18 or older.1
