Parents Overwhelmed by Support for Baby Ethan

Friday, February 19, 2010

By Jeff Alexander

A Pulaski couple says they are overwhelmed by all the support they're receiving on behalf of their nine-month-old son.

A rare liver disease has young Ethan Burant in dire need of a transplant.

The last 6 months have proven to be quite the emotional roller-coaster for the Burant family. When little Ethan came down with an ear infection in August, his doctor noticed he looked jaundiced and ordered some tests.

"A couple of hours after the ultrasound, Ethan and I were actually driving home and we got the news Ethan was going to need a liver transplant," mom Gail Burant says.

The Burant's learned Ethan had a rare disease called Biliary Atresia. The hardest part: Only a transplant can save his life.

"I try to keep myself busy, but you constantly think about it, it's hard not to think about it," dad Steve Burant says.

Just last week, though, Steve, Gail, and their oldest son Connor received some wonderful news. A nephew in Milwaukee volunteered to donate part of his liver to Ethan and doctors determined he's a match.

"There are no words. We call him his angel on earth," Gail says.

And it's just in time. Ethan's color is getting worse and Gail expects he'll need the transplant surgery in the next two months.

"We have a lot of faith there's a big light at the end of the tunnel and he's going to be great and grow up and do great things."

But first, there's some important business to attend to.

The Burants have learned hundreds of their friends and co-workers in the Pulaski and Suamico area -- and beyond -- are holding a benefit Friday night to help cover their tremendous medical expenses.

"Knowing people we know are going to be there, and then people we don't coming out to support, it's going to be hard to say thank you enough," Steve says.

A fundraiser to help pay Ethan's medical bills is planned Friday, February 19, in Howard.
The benefit is at Townline Sports Bar & Grill, 2544 Lineville Road, from 6 to 10 P.M.
Admission is $10. Townline is also donating 10% of the cash bar proceeds.
Donations can be also be made to the Ethan Burant Benefit Fund at any Anchor Bank branch.
